Virden Oil Capitals main camp is over. The Oil Capitals first exhibition game is September 10th at home against the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League's Estevan Bruins. The Caps will open the 2023-24 Manitoba Junior Hockey League season Friday, September 22nd against the defending Turnbull Cup champion Steinbach Pistons at Tundra Oil & Gas Place.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers five-game winning streak came to end Sunday night in Regina. The Saskatchewan Roughriders edged Winnipeg 32-30 in overtime in the annual Labour Day Classic. The Riders found the end zone on their first possession of OT and were successful on the two-point convert. Zach Collaros then completed a 35-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Lawler. The Bombers attempt at their two-point convert failed. Winnipeg is in first place in the CFL West with a 9-3 record. The Bombers and Roughriders will meet again Saturday in the Banjo Bowl at IG Field.


The Winnipeg Goldeyes gave up five runs in the bottom of the first inning and lost 9-2 to the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks. The Fish play their final game of the 2023 American Association season this afternoon against the Redhawks at Newman Outdoor Field.


Canada’s men’s basketball team has qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander poured in 30 points as Canada defeated Spain 88-85 Sunday in Indonesia and will face Slovenia Wednesday in the quarterfinals at the FIBA World Cup. Canada earned a berth at the Paris Olympics thanks to that win over Spain.


Canada captured bronze at the NORCECA Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship in Quebec City. Canada defeated Cuba 25-21, 25-17, 17-25, 25-16 in the third place game at the University of Laval. The Dominican Republic beat the United States 12-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-19, 15-13 in the gold medal game.
