The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have signed American linebacker Kyrie Wilson to a one-year-contract extension. He was scheduled to become a free agent in February. The Fresco, California native returns to the Bombers in 2023 for what will be his sixth season after originally signing with the football club in 2017. Wilson had his 2022 season cut short after suffering an achilles injury in week four. Wilson played on both Grey Cup championship teams in 2019 and 2021. His best season statistically came in 2019 when he started all 18 games and finished third on the club in defensive plays registering 63 defensive tackles, four special teams tackles along with three sacks, one interception and five pass knockdowns.


Brett Opperman had a hat trick as the Killarney Shamrocks defeated the Deloraine Royals 7-1 in the lone game played Friday night in the Tiger Hills Hockey League. Jagger Thomas, Reid Gow, Cayden Barwick and Kyle Peters also scored for the Shamrocks. Isaac Friesen chipped in with three helpers. Nial Mills had the lone goal for the Royals.


In the Westman High School Hockey League – Tyan Mykula scored five times and Kash Henkelman had two goals and five assists as the Swan Valley Tigers downed the Deloraine/Hartney Colts 11-2. Xavier Mowbray scored four times in the Major Pratt Trojans 6-4 victory over the Vincent Massey Vikings.


Canada West will meet Canada East and the United States will take on Sweden in the semifinals at the World Junior A Hockey Challenge in Cornwall, Ontario.


St. Adolphe’s Avery Pickering was the lone Manitoban named to Team Canada’s 23-player roster for the 2023 World Women’s U18 Hockey Championship that will be held January 8th-15th in Ostersund, Sweden. Canada is in Group A with Finland, Sweden and the United States. Group B is comprised of Czechia, Japan, Slovakia and Switzerland. Canada opens the tournament against Finland on January 8th.


The Winnipeg Jets have placed defenseman Nate Schmidt on IR. He was injured in the Jets 2-1 overtime victory over the Nashville Predators on Thursday. Ville Heinola joined the team on an emergency basis. Winnipeg will play road games tonight against the Vancouver Canucks and Sunday against the Seattle Kraken.
