Wawanesa’s Conner Cory of the Altona Bisons is the Jack Hind trophy winner as the Manitoba Junior Baseball League’s Top Pitcher and the David Bowles Bursary/University of Winnipeg Scholarship recipient. Cory was also named the MJBL’s All-Star right-handed pitcher.


The Melita Bisons, Souris Elks, Wawanesa Jets and Miniota/Elkhorn C-Hawks were winners in the Tiger Hills Hockey League on the night before Christmas Eve. Ryan Crepeele scored twice as the Bisons defeated the Carberry Plainsmen 5-2; Mike Fortin and Ashley Robertson each had two goals and two assists as the Elks beat the Rivers Jets 8-3; Mike Reykdal had a hat trick as the Jets downed the Hartney Blues 6-4 and Josh Martin and Shawn Bowles had two goals each in the C-Hawks 8-3 victory over the Virden Oil Kings. Miniota/Elkhorn has won 10 straight games to start the season.


Ozy Atkinson had a hat trick and Jackson Bachewich made 21 saves as the Minnedosa/Erickson Chancellors blanked Reston/Elkhorn/Melita/Pierson 6-0 in the lone Westman High School Hockey League game.


The Winnipeg Jets lost their final game before the start of the Christmas break. Washington captain Alex Ovechkin scored twice in the Capitals 4-1 victory over Winnipeg. Ovechkin potted his 801st and 802nd career goals and passed Gordie Howe for second place on the all-time list. Kevin Stenlund had the lone goal for the Jets who are off until Tuesday when they face the Minnesota Wild at Canada Life Centre.


Leon Gawanke and Jeff Malott scored power play goals and Declan Chisholm had three assists as the Manitoba Moose edged the Iowa Wild 4-3. Manitoba netminder Arvid Holm made 35 saves.


Connor Bedard scored two power play goals and Thomas Milic stopped 19 shots as Team Canada defeated Finland 5-3. Canada won all three pre-tournament games and will open the 2023 World Junior Hockey Championship on Boxing Day against Czechia in Halifax.
