Curling Canada announced Friday afternoon that Team Einarson lead Briane Harris is ineligible to compete at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Calgary due to unspecified reasons. Longtime alternate Krysten Karwacki has moved into the lead position. Karwacki curled 88% as the four-time defending champions defeated Laurie St. Georges of Quebec 8-2 on the opening draw Friday night.


The defending champion Miniota/Elkhorn C-Hawks and the Minnedosa Bombers are into round two of the Tiger Hills Hockey League playoffs. Jason Bowles and Taylor Sanheim each had a hat trick as the C-Hawks downed the Souris Elks 7-1 and swept that West Division quarterfinal two games to none. Matt Saler had three goals and an assist as the Bombers beat the Carberry Plainsmen 9-4 and took that East Division quarterfinal in two straight. Meyer Nell had a goal and three assists as the Boissevain Border Kings defeated the Hartney Blues 6-2 and evened that West series at one. Jeremy Johnson had three goals and two helpers as the Virden Oil Kings beat the Deloraine Royals 10-2 in the opening game of their series. Kobe Campbell scored three unanswered second period goals in the Gladstone Lakers 6-4 victory over the Wawanesa Jets. Niklas Anderson made 45 saves as the MacGregor Wild beat the Neepawa Farmers 4-1 and the Killarney Shamrocks downed the Pilot Mound Pilots 6-1. Those were the first games in their respective East Division quarterfinals.


Rylan Bray had four assists and Austin Michaluk recorded the shutout as the Westman High School Hockey League leading Neepawa Tigers blanked Boissevain/Souris/Deloraine/Waskada 7-0. Xander Mecas scored four times in the Major Pratt Trojans 8-6 victory over Virden. Brady Burghart had a goal and an assist as the Swan Valley Tigers beat Reston/Elkhorn/Melita/Hartney 4-2. Brett Melnyk scored twice as the Hamiota/Rivers/Elton/Strathclair Huskies downed Birtle/Shoal Lake/Rossburn 7-3.


Braeden Lewis scored twice and Eric Reid made 28 saves as the Virden Oil Capitals defeated the Neepawa Titans 5-1 at Tundra Oil & Gas Place. Roux Bazin, Joey Bielik and Noel Englot also found the back of the net for the Oil Capitals.


Jaxon Jacobson had a goal and an assist and Brett Hyland scored his 30th of the season in the Brandon Wheat Kings 5-3 win over the Calgary Hitmen at Westoba Place.


Brandon’s Kristen Campbell made 30 saves for her second shutout of the season as Toronto blanked Montreal 3-0. The Professional Women’s Hockey League game at Scotiabank Arena set a league and women’s attendance record of 19,285.
