Scott Glennie scored a pair of third period goals including the go-ahead marker 20 seconds into the final frame as the Gladstone Lakers defeated the Minnedosa Bombers 4-1 in game one of the Tiger Hills Hockey League’s best-of-five East Division final. Sean Kubas and Jory Geddes also scored for the hometown Lakers. Clay Bergeson replied for the Bombers. Game two goes tonight in Minnedosa.

 

The Hamiota/Rivers/Elton/Strathclair Huskies have advanced to the Westman High School Hockey League’s consolation semifinals. Nolan Perreault scored a power play goal at 9:06 of the third period as the Huskies edged the Birtle/Shoal Lake/Rossburn Falcons 3-2 and swept the best-of-three quarterfinal in two straight. Nick Baskier had a hat trick as the Swan Valley Tigers downed the Virden Golden Bears 8-2 in game one of their consolation series.

 

David Bielik scored 1:32 into overtime to lift the Virden Oil Capitals past the OCN Blizzard 4-3. Braden Fischer, Parker Johnson and Carson Buydens also scored for the Oil Capitals who trailed seven minutes into the second period. The Neepawa Titans lost 6-4 to the Waywayseecappo Wolverines and the Swan Valley Stampeders fell 7-3 to the Dauphin Kings. Despite the loss the Stamps clinched the fourth and final playoff spot in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s West Division. Swan Valley is two points ahead of Neepawa and both teams have one game left. The Titans lost the season series to the Stampeders.

 

The Winnipeg Ice scored two goals in the final minute-and-a-half of the second period and then added three more in the third en route to a 6-3 victory over the Brandon Wheat Kings at Westoba Place. Benjamin Zloty had a goal and two assists for the Ice. Ridly Greig had a goal and an assist for the Wheat Kings.

 

The Manitoba Moose lost 4-3 to the Belleville Senators. Jake Lucchini, Egor Sokolov and Rourke Chartier scored in the shootout for the Senators. Nick Hutchison, Nelson Nogier and Cole Maier scored in regulation for the Moose.

 

Both Manitoba teams were eliminated Friday at the Brier in Lethbridge. Jason Gunnlaugson beat Mike McEwen 9-3 in a tie-breaker and then lost 7-3 to reigning champion Brendan Bottcher in the first playoff round.

 

Canada’s Paralympic Hockey team will face the United States in the gold medal game (10:05 p.m.) at the 2022 Winter Paralympic Games in Beijing. Canadian athletes have won 23 medals including eight gold, five silver and 10 bronze. Brian McKeever captured the 16th paralympic gold medal of his career in the mid-distance cross country. The 42-year-old Canmore, Alberta native swept the podium in all three individual cross country events for four consecutive Paralympics.
