The Canadian Women’s National Softball Team shutdown Mexico 7-0 in the bronze medal game on the second last day of competition at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile. Boissevain’s Zoe Hicks drilled a two-run single in Team Canada’s four-run third inning. Canadian athletes have won 160 medals including 46 gold, 52 silver and 62 bronze.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will meet the B.C. Lions in the CFL’s West Division final next Saturday at IG Field. Vernon Adams Jr. ran for three touchdowns and threw for two more as B.C. defeated the Calgary Stampeders 41-30 in the West semifinal. The Bombers took two of three from the Lions in the regular season. Cody Fajardo threw two touchdown passes and ran for 62 yards in the Montreal Alouettes 27-12 victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The Alouettes will face the Toronto Argonauts in the East final at BMO Field.


The Deloraine Royals, Gladstone Lakers, Carberry Plainsmen, Miniota/Elkhorn C-Hawks and Killarney Shamrocks were winners in the Tiger Hills Hockey League Saturday night. Billy Patmore made 41 saves as the Royals shutdown the Pilot Mound Pilots 5-0. Connor Grunsten had a goal and two assists as the Lakers doubled up on the Hartney Blues 4-2. Connor Slipp stopped all 44 shots he faced as the Plainsmen won their first game of the season 4-0 over the Souris Elks. Cory Gardham made 19 saves in the defending champion C-Hawks 4-0 victory over the Minnedosa Bombers and Jordan Robertson had three goals and an assist as the Shamrocks downed the Bisons 6-1 in Melita.


In the Westman High School Hockey League – Jordan Svoboda made 19 saves as Killarney/Wawanesa blanked Reston/Elkhorn/Melita/Pierson 7-0. Ronin Mouck had three goals and an assist in the Dauphin Clippers 6-2 victory over Crocus Plains. Jaden Browning Lozinski had a five-point night with three goals and two assists as the Virden Golden Bears downed Boissevain/Souris/Deloraine/Waskada 6-3. Colby Asselstine scored twice in the Birtle/Shoal Lake/Rossburn Falcons 5-4 win over the Swan Valley Tigers and Josh Romanik found the back of the net four times as the Vincent Massey Vikings defeated the Sandy Bay Badgers 12-1.


The Southwest Cougars suffered just their second loss of the 2023-24 Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League season. Southwest gave up four unanswered second period goals and fell 6-1 to the Eastman Selects in Beausejour. Connor Hoemsen had the lone goal for the Cougars.


Ivy Perkin scored both Westman goals in the Wildcats 5-2 loss to the Winnipeg Avros in Hartney. Westman netminder Kylie Hack faced 26 shots.


The top two teams in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s West Division met Saturday night at Tundra Oil & Gas Place. Alex Senf potted the shootout winner as the Dauphin Kings shaded Virden 3-2. Josh Lehto and Nolan Chastko did the goal scoring in regulation for the Oil Capitals who trail the first place Kings by two points. Dauphin does have two games in hand on Virden.


The Winnipeg Jets three-game losing skid came to an end Saturday afternoon in Arizona. Nino Niederreiter had a hat trick and Branden Dillon had two goals and an assist as the Jets downed the Coyotes 5-3. Arizona lead 2-0 and 3-2 before Winnipeg scored three unanswered. Connor Hellebuyck made 23 saves for the Jets who wrap up their three-game road trip Tuesday against St. Louis Blues.


The Manitoba Moose dropped a 4-3 decision to the Rockford IceHogs at Canada Life Centre. Axel Jonsson-Fjallby, Brad Lambert and Nikita Chibrikov did the goal scoring for the Moose.


Brad Gushue won gold at the 2023 Pan Continental Championships at the Kelowna Curling Club. Gushue, vice-skip Mark Nichols, second E.J Harnden and lead Geoff Walker defeated Jongduk Park of South Korea 8-3 in the men’s final. Canada’s spot in the 2024 World Men’s Curling Championship in Schaffhausen, Switzerland was confirmed at Team Gushue’s performance in Kelowna. The top five countries in the event - Canada, South Korea, Japan, the United States and New Zealand – qualified for the world championships later this season.
