Cala Korman of Killarney was the only Manitoban to make the cut at the 108th Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship at Westmount Golf & Country Club in Kitchener, Ontario. Korman was five-over par 78 Wednesday and got in on the cut line at plus 13. Clara Peake of Binscarth was 85 and finished at plus 18; Charmaine Mackid of Breezy Bend was 84 and plus 21; Addison Kartusch of St. Charles was 86 and plus 23; Rhonda Orr of Southwood was 83 and plus 24 and Manitoba champion Jeri Lafleche of Clear Lake was 89 and finished at plus 25. Katherine Muzi has the lead at the midway point. The Newport Beach, California native is minus three and leads Alissa Xu of Richmond Hill, Ontario by one shot heading into round three.
It's day one of the 111th Provincial Men's Amateur Golf Championship at Elmhurst. 147 competitors have registered including defending champion and two-time Provincial Junior Men's champion Braxton Kuntz of Breezy Bend. With this year’s championship decided over 54 holes, the field will be cut following two rounds to the low 60 and ties as well as any players within 10 strokes of first place. The 2022 champion will also be given an exemption into the Manitoba Open, August 18-21 at the Southwood Golf & Country Club.
The Hamiota Red Sox and Wawanesa Brewers are going the distance in their best-of-three quarterfinal. The Red Sox plated three runs in the third inning and tacked on three more in the fourth en route to a 10-3 victory over the Brewers in Wawanesa Wednesday night. Jeff Knight and Brady Waddell homered for Hamiota while Hayden Crampain had three hits and two rbi. The deciding third game goes next Tuesday in Hamiota and the winner will join the Boissevain Centennials and Deloraine Royals in the Southwest Baseball League semifinals. The Oak River Dodgers host the Virden Oilers tonight. The Dodgers defeated the Oilers 22-5 in their series opener Tuesday night in Virden.
The Winnipeg Goldeyes gave up five runs in the first inning and lost 12-6 to Chicago. Ryan Lidge had two hits and four rbi for the Dogs. David Washington and Deon Stafford Jr. both had two-run homers for the Fish.
The Winnipeg Ice have acquired forward Josh Medernach and a third round pick in the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft from the Red Deer Rebels in exchange for defenceman Tanner Brown and a seventh round pick in the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft. Medernach, 19, from Lloydminster, Alberta, registered one assist and four penalty minutes in nine games with the Rebels last season. Over the past three seasons, the 6’0”, 183 pound centre has played 29 WHL regular season games.
A COVID-19 outbreak among Saskatchewan Roughriders players has put the team's game against the Toronto Argonauts Saturday in Regina in jeopardy. The Roughriders cancelled practice Wednesday after six players tested positive for coronavirus over the past two days. The team says 10 players are now in health and safety protocols.
