The Provincial High School Badminton Championships begin today at Sport Manitoba in downtown Winnipeg. Round robin play in junior varsity boys singles, boys doubles and girls doubles starts this morning while girls singles and mixed doubles begins this afternoon. It's also day one of the provincial varsity championships. The round robin in boys singles and boys doubles starts at 5 p.m. Varsity girls singles, girls doubles and mixed doubles begins Friday afternoon. 


Two Virden Oil Capitals forwards have committed to play USPORTS Hockey this fall. Braeden Lewis will be off to Brock University and Grady Lane will play for the University of Manitoba Bisons. Lewis had 12 goals and 28 assists in 36 games this season while adding one goal and 4 assists in 12 playoff games. Lane scored 14 goals and 16 assists while adding four goals and three assists in 12 playoff games.


Dalton Andrew of the Turnbull Cup champion Winkler Flyers has been named a finalist for the Canadian Junior Hockey League’s Forward of the Year award. The Brandon native led the Manitoba Junior Hockey League in scoring this season with 82 points in 54 games, including a league-leading 43 goals and seven game-winners. Andrew was named an MJHL First Team All-Star and earned the Mike Ridley Trophy as the league's Top Scorer.


Canada will face Latvia today (11:45 a.m.) in the quarterfinals at the World U18 Hockey Championship in Finland. Canada finished the preliminary round in first place in Group B with a perfect 4-0-0-0 record.


Toronto defeated Minnesota 4-1 Wednesday securing first place in the PWHL standings heading into the playoffs. With the victory, Toronto will be able to choose to play either the third or fourth place team in the first round of the playoffs. Minnesota, Ottawa, and Boston are all still battling for the final two playoff spots. Each team has one game remaining in the regular season schedule. Natalie Spooner scored twice, and Emma Maltais had a goal and two assists to lead Toronto’s offence. Brandon's Kristen Campbell made 25 saves to record her league-leading 15th win of the season.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have added four players to their training camp roster. The football club signed three Americans – defensive backs Isaiah Norman, Patrick Rogers and Demetries Ford along with Canadian kicker Dante Mastrogiuseppe.
