Marty Murray has been hired as the new general manager of the Brandon Wheat Kings. The 47-year-old Lyleton native spent the past two seasons as head coach and general manager of the Sioux Falls Stampede of the United States Hockey League. The former Brandon captain and Western Hockey League Player of the Year, played 264 games with the Wheat Kings and recorded 132 goals and added 260 assists for 392 career points. He was named to Team Canada’s World Junior Team in 1994 and 1995, being awarded Best Forward and named to the World Junior All-Star team while leading the tournament in scoring with 15 points in 1995. Murray was drafted by the Calgary Flames with the 96th overall pick in the 1993 National Hockey League Entry Draft. He went onto have a 14-year professional hockey career spanning the American Hockey League, Europe and 261 NHL games with the Flames, Philadelphia Flyers, Carolina Hurricanes and Los Angeles Kings.


Canada will play its final preliminary round game today (1 p.m.) against the United States at the 2022 World Women's Hockey Championship in Herning, Denmark. Team Canada and the U.S. are tied for first place in Group A with identical 3-0 records.


It's day one of the Canadian Senior Women's Golf Championship and Canadian Women's Mid-Amateur Championship at the Breezy Bend Country Club in Headingley. Shelly Stouffer of  Nanoose Bay, B.C. is the defending National Senior Women's champion and also won the U.S. Women’s Senior Amateur Championship in Alaska earlier this summer. Stouffer will tee it up at 9:30 a.m. with Allison Chisholm of St. John and 2022 Manitoba champion Rhonda Orr of Southwood. Christina Proteau of Port Alberni, B.C. is the reigning Canadian Mid-Amateur champion. 


The Winnipeg Goldeyes gave up 11 two-out runs and lost 12-5 to the Kansas City Monarchs at Shaw Park. Max Murphy ripped a solo home run to left in the bottom of the ninth inning. It was Murphy’s league-leading 30th home run of the season, and he becomes just the fifth player in American Association history to reach the 30-home run benchmark.
