Canada opened the 2023 World Junior Hockey Championship in Halifax with a 5-2 loss Czechia. Shane Wright and Connor Bedard did the goal scoring for the Canadians who trailed 2-1 after the first period and then gave up three goals in the middle frame. It’s Czechia’s first win over Canada since the 20214 tournament in Sweden. Canada’s next preliminary round game is Wednesday against Germany.


Canada dropped a 3-2 decision to HC Sparta Prague on the opening day of the Spengler Cup Hockey Tournament in Davos, Switzerland. Brett Connolly had both goals for the Canadians who outshot Sparta Prague 30-19. Canada’s next game is today against host HC Davos.


The Christmas break is over the Winnipeg Jets. The Jets face the Minnesota Wild tonight at Canada Life Centre. Winnipeg is coming off road losses to the Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals last week Thursday and Friday.


The 2023 Provincial U18 Curling Championships begin tonight at the Altona Curling Club. The first boys draw is at 8 p.m. while the girls opening draw is Wednesday at 8 a.m. The seven mens teams competing are skipped by Nash Sugden of Morden; Zach Norris of Morris; Colton Olafson of Portage; Jace Freeman of Virden; Ronan Peterson of the Heather; Luke Robins of West St. Paul and Nathan Poklar of East St. Paul. The 10 womens teams are skipped by Dayna Wahl of Altona; Shaela Hayward of Carman; Shayna Benson of Dauphin; Bethany Allen of the Granite; Grace Beaudry of St. Vital; Karys Buchalter of West St. Paul; Meghan Lagadi of Pembina; Liv Leadbeater of Swan River; Rylie Buchalter of the Heather and Julia Van Ryssel of Springfield.
