The McCreary/Ste. Rose Mountaineers and Killarney/Wawanesa Raiders were winners in the Westman High School Hockey League Monday night. Kayden Caumartin scored the only goal of the shootout to lift the Mountaineers past the Reston/Elkhorn/Melita/Pierson Renegades 6-5 and Logan Gudnason had a hat trick in the Raiders 11-2 victory over the Sandy Bay Badgers. Connor Martin added two goals and two assists for Killarney/Wawanesa while Keiran DeBaker and Russell Outhwaite each had a goal and three helpers. 
 


Brandon Wheat Kings defenceman Chad Nychuk has been named Western Hockey League Player of the Week. The Rossburn native, who celebrated his 21st birthday Sunday, posted a League-best 10 points (3G-7A) in three appearances with Brandon this past week. Nychuk started his week with two assists in a 7-6 loss to the Regina Pats on Wednesday. He then set a new career high Friday with five points (1G-4A), helping the Wheat Kings double up the Lethbridge Hurricanes 6-3. Nychuk added three more points (2G-1A) Saturday as Brandon dropped a 6-5 decision to the Moose Jaw Warriors.
 


Canada’s Wheelchair Curling team has a 4-3 record at the 2022 Winter Paralympic Games in Beijing. Mark Ideson, Ina Forrest, Jon Thurston and Manitoban Dennis Thiessen lost 9-4 to Korea and 9-8 to Latvia.  Canada’s Paralympic Hockey Team clinched a spot in the semifinals after downing Korea 6-0 in its final preliminary-round game.Canadian athletes have won 13 medals in Beijing including five gold, two silver and six bronze. Mark Arendz of Hartsville, PEI shot 20-for-20 en route to the gold medal in the men’s 10-kilometre Para biathlon.
 


The Winnipeg Goldeyes re-signed catcher/outfielder Deon Stafford. The Harrisburg, Pennsylvania native joined the Goldeyes in early-August, and hit .309 with four home runs and 21 RBI in just 27 games. Stafford hit safely in 21 of his 27 games played, and rattled off a career-high nine-game hitting streak from August 21st-29th. Defensively, the 25-year-old saw action at catcher, left field, and right field.  Stafford opened the 2021 season in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ organization where he played in 20 games across two affiliates, and reached the Double-A level for the first time in his career. The Goldeyes now have 18 players signed to contracts for the 2022 season. American Association clubs may carry up to 30 players during spring training, which begins May 5th.
