The 2023 CFL Draft takes place tonight. The Ottawa Redblacks have the first overall selection followed by the Edmonton Elks. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will pick eighth in round one. The Montreal Alouettes own the fifth and seventh picks in the opening round.
 

The Winnipeg Jets signed forward Nikita Chibrikov to a three-year, entry-level contract worth US$925,000 a year at the NHL level. That deal begins in 2023-24. The 20-year-old Moscow native had a goal and an assist in 31 games last season with Spartak Moscow of the Kontinental Hockey League. Chibrikov was selected by Winnipeg in the second round (50th overall) of the 2021 NHL draft. He has signed a professional tryout contract with the Manitoba Moose who he will join for the remainder of the Calder Cup playoffs.


The British Columbia Hockey League's Board of Governors has voted to not renew the league’s agreement with Hockey Canada, meaning its 18 franchises will operate outside Hockey Canada’s system as of June 1, 2023. The league says the move will allow its teams to recruit under-18 players from other provinces and give them a pathway toward playing college hockey in Canada and the United States.


The Winnipeg Ice face the Blades in Saskatoon tonight in game three of the Western Hockey League's Eastern Conference final. The Ice lead the best-of-seven series two games to none after beating the Blades 3-0 and 6-2 this past weekend at the Wayne Fleming Arena. Winnipeg forward Connor McClennon has been named the WHL Player of the Week and Daniel Hauser is the Goaltender of the Week.


The Winnipeg Goldeyes announced the signings of rookie outfielder Demias Jimerson and right-handed pitcher Josh Vincent. A native of Hot Springs, Arkansas, Jimerson will be making his professional debut with the Goldeyes. The 22-year-old was a 2022 National Junior College Athletic Association third team All-American at National Park College. Jimerson batted .398 with 14 home runs, 61 runs batted in, and 35 stolen bases in 51 games. Vincent spent parts of the past two seasons with the Gary SouthShore RailCats. In 2022 the 26-year-old reliever posted a 5-4 win-loss record with one save and a 5.12 earned run average. The Goldeyes now have 24 players under contract for 2023. American Association clubs may carry up to 30 players during spring training, which begins May 3rd.
