Nine Virden Oil Capitals have been selected to play in the 2024 MJHL-SJHL Showcase January 30th & 31st at the Seven Oaks Sportsplex in Winnipeg. Forward Bryce Bryant and defenseman Cole Slobodian will play for Team 18U White. Forwards Nolan Chastko, Braeden Lewis, Roux Bazin and Josh Lehto; defensemen David Bielik and Trevor Hunt along with goaltender Eric Reid will play for Team 20U Black. 


The Oil Capitals suffered their first loss of 2024 Tuesday night at the Yellowhead Centre. Killarney's Cody Gudnason scored the go-ahead goal midway through the third period and Connor Thompson added an empty netter with 1:25 remaining as the Neepawa Titans downed Virden 4-2. Trevor Hunt and Ty Schell replied for the Oil Capitals who led 1-0 and 2-1 at the period breaks.


Connor Hellebuyck made 35 saves and Kyle Connor scored his team leading 18th goal of the season into an empty net at 18:38 of the third period as the Winnipeg Jets defeated the N.Y. Islanders 4-2 at Canada Life Centre. It was Connor's first game back after missing the previous 16 games with a knee injury. Gabriel Vilardi, Neal Pionk and Mason Appleton also scored for the Jets who begin a three-game road trip Saturday against the Senators in Ottawa. 


Marie-Philip Poulin scored the go-ahead goal at 13:46 of the third period as Montreal shaded New York 3-2 in the lone PWHL game. Ann-Renee Desbiens made 30 saves in net for Montreal. 


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have agreed to terms on a one-year extension with left tackle Stanley Bryant. The 37-year-old Goldsboro, North Carolina native returns in 2024 for his 9th season with the Blue Bombers and 14th in the Canadian Football League. The most-decorated offensive lineman in Canadian Football League history, Bryant is a four-time winner of the CFL Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman Award (2017, 2018, 2021, 2022) and a seven-time CFL All-Star. Bryant began his career with the Calgary Stampeders in 2010 and was twice named that club’s top offensive lineman. He signed with the Blue Bombers as a free agent in 2015 and has been honoured as the team’s Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman six times (2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022). Over the course of his CFL career, Bryant has suited up for 203 games – including 170 with the Blue Bombers – and has started in all of them.
