Kaitlyn Lawes of the Fort Rouge Curling Club is the number one seed for the 2023 Provincial Scotties Tournament of Hearts. Lawes along with Selena Njegovan, Jocelyn Peterman, Kristin MacCuish & Jill Officer have qualified in nine events, reached the final three times and won two championships in their first season together. Defending champion Mackenzie Zacharias of the Altona Curling Club is the second seed. Zacharias, Karlee Burgess, Emily Zacharias & Lauren Lenentine won the 2022 Provincial Scotties in Carberry and this year added Manitoba, Canadian and World champion Jennifer Jones to the roster. The season’s performance also includes qualifying in nine events with two final appearances and two championships. Rounding out the top five seeds are Abby Ackland, Meghan Walter, Sara Oliver, Mackenzie Elias & Kaitlyn Jones of East St. Paul; Chelsea Carey, Jolene Campbell, Liz Fyfe & Rachel Erickson of East St. Paul and Beth Peterson, Jenna Loder, Katherine Doerksen, Melissa Gordon & Robyn Njegovan of the Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club. The 2023 Provincial Scotties Tournament of Hearts begins one week from today at the East St. Paul Arena.


Jace Freeman of Virden will play his round robin opener at 8 p.m. against Zach Norris of Morris at the 2023 Provincial Junior Men's Curling Championships in Portage. Hunter Dundas of Brandon will meet Ronan Peterson of the Heather at 10 a.m.


The Southwest Cougars gave up three first period goals including two on the power play and lost 5-3 to the Yellowhead Chiefs in Shoal Lake. Luke Mackenzie, Nicholas Cullen and Sebastian Stone did the goal scoring for the Cougars. Bryce Bryant had three assists for the Chiefs. Easton Odut scored twice as the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League leading Brandon Wheat Kings downed the Parkland Rangers 6-4.


The Manitoba Junior Hockey League's Steinbach Pistons and Portage Terriers both moved up in the Canadian Junior Hockey League's Top 20 Rankings. The Pistons went from number 10 to number nine. The Terriers moved up four spots to number 10. The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League's Battlefords North Stars, who suffered their first regulation loss of the season last Saturday, are the number one nationally ranked team for the 11th week in a row. 


In the Westman High School Hockey League - the Minnedosa/Erickson Chancellors scored four third period goals and beat Hamiota/Rivers/Elton/Strathclair 4-1 and Porter Ewert had a hat trick in the Vincent Massey Vikings 6-3 victory over the Virden Golden Bears.


The Winnipeg Jets opened their five-game road trip with a 4-1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens. Evgenii Dadonov had a pair of goals for the Habs who scored three times in the second period. Kyle Connor potted his 22nd of the season and 200th of his NHL career on the power play 1:24 into the middle frame to give Winnipeg a 1-0 lead. The Jets next game is Thursday against the Toronto Maple Leafs.


The Manitoba Moose began their six-game homestand with a 2-0 victory over the Chicago Wolves at Canada Life Centre. Nicholas Jones and Brayden Burke did the goal scoring and Oskari Salminen made 25 saves for his second shutout of the season.
