The Brandon and District Chapter Learning Disabilities Association of Manitoba (LDAM) is hosting an advocacy workshop, Friday, April 21st at the Brandon Riverbank Discovery Centre.

Jacqueline Goods is the Executive Director for the Brandon & District office and extends her invite to everyone who wishes to learn more about the resources available for those with learning disabilities, and those who advocate for family members who struggle with a learning disability.

The Brandon office has been helping families and individuals in the Westman Region since 1978, supporting children, teens and adults with learning disabilities, including Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) and Attention Deficit.

The LDAM provides programming for math tutoring, reading tutoring, as well as summer camps.  They are also able to assist in diagnosing learning disabilities to help with funded school programs to further assist children in the classroom.

"We decided that we would strategically offer more programming for the community," explains Goods, "and one of those plans was to implement this advocacy workshop because a lot of times we work with people who just don't know where to start."

The workshop is designed to help anyone who wishes to advocate for a family member, or themselves.

"So, if it's a parent advocating for their child, we share how to talk to schoolteachers, how to talk to the principal, how to talk to resource teachers, if they have a child that has been diagnosed, or suspecting a disability. They might ask where do they start? How do they advocate? And how do they access programs in their community as well as Winnipeg?"

The LDAM office in Winnipeg works specifically with individuals diagnosed with dyslexia, offering tutoring and individual programs.

The upcoming Giving Voice Advocacy Workshop will feature speakers from the Manitoba Advocate for Children and Youth office, Brandon Community Options, Samaritan House Ministries, Scott Smith from Family Advocacy Network of Manitoba, and Dr. Breanna Lawrence.

Topics include 'What is Advocacy? How to Advocate, turning advocacy into meaningful action, and advocating for people and organizations.
