It was a journey more than a decade in the making, but last week Upper Fort Garry Provincial Park officially opened to the public in downtown Winnipeg near the corner of Main Street and Broadway.

The Fort, built between 1835 and 1837, was the centre of trade for an area that was larger than Eastern Europe and was the administrative and judicial body of the Red River Settlement, which was governed by the Hudson’s Bay Company. It was also the place where Louis Riel formed the Provisional Government which led to Manitoba entering Confederation as a province. Upper Fort Garry was demolished between 1881 and 1888.

Friends of Upper Fort Garry Board Chair Dr. Jerry Falk joined the Morning Show today to share some of the history behind the historical site, and discuss how technology is being used to engage visitors.

Dr. Gray, who is Dean Emeritus and Senior Scholar at I.H. Asper School of Business at the University of Manitoba , also talked about the unique location of the park... downtown Winnipeg, and what opportunities that will provide.

You can download the Upper Fort Garry Provincial Park app from the App Store or Google Play, and can learn more about the site on the Friends of Upper Fort Garry website.
