By 2020 1 in 4 Manitobans will be living either with diabetes or prediabetes, that from Michael Cloutier, President and CEO of the Canadian Diabetes Association. Cloutier was in Manitoba this week to share the most recent findings with members of the government. He adds the economic burden of diabetes in Manitoba is serious, and threatens the sustainability of our healthcare system. There are about 94 thousand people in our province that have type 1 or type 2 diabetes and Cloutier says if left unchecked, by 2020 that could be 139 thousand, or over 10% of the population.

He add it's estimated the financial impact of diabetes in Manitoba currently costs the province $498 million per year, and by 2020 these costs could increase to $639 million. Cloutier indicates there is good news.

Cloutier was here to raise awareness and promote healthy lifestyles. He points out good nutrition and increased exercise can greatly reduce the incidence of type 2 diabetes. Cloutier says turning the numbers around will require a broad-based societal change and shift in government approach.

He points out they have been travelling all across the country sharing these provincial numbers, and have been well received.

Cloutier shares the numbers are quite alarming, and he believes this is a call for action.
