The ongoing pandemic has certainly made its mark this past year, and for many, it has changed the face of our communities.

For the Municipality of Deloraine-Winchester, Reeve Gord Weidenhamer, says without a doubt Covid has been a big influence with a lot of conversation on that topic in Council chambers.

“We tried to work on ideas to kick-start economy, tourism and thing like that,” he explains,  “things that have been put on hold for a year back in 2020 and I think we did do some of those initiatives, but at the same time there is always work to be done.”

Building projects were fewer, what with the rise of lumber costs and the difficulting in sourcing certain material.  “The supplies and the world economy in every sector has been a challenge.  We did see some renos, but as far as construction goes it’s been a pretty slow year. I think people are hoping for better days ahead as far as building goes.”

One of the highlights of the year was to see the doors open to the previously named Wilderness Inn.  New owners have taken over the business and the Morningstar Inn is attracting more tourists to the Deloraine area. “Morning Star Inn is up and running and we’re thankful for that.”

Another positive is the local recreation centre is back to having families enjoy the sports facilities.  “Sport and entertainment and community events can happen again.  There’s limitations with covid again, but it’s more normal, and that’s probably one of the biggest issues that we wanted to see happen.”

“Everybody is sick of being stuck inside and we all just want a more normal life.”

Weidenhamer says the Recreation complex has had more bookings going into the new year.  “You have to follow the covid protocol, of course, but at the same time its back in use.  The sports arena, the curling clubs are back up and running.”
