The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have lost for just the second time this season. Dane Evans threw five touchdown passes as the Hamilton Tiger-Cats defeated the two-time defending Grey Cup champions 48-31 Saturday at Tim Horton’s Field. Winnipeg quarterback Zach Collaros tossed touchdown passes to Rasheed Bailey and Nick Demski but was intercepted twice. Early in the second quarter Collaros fumbled the ball while being sacked by Ti-Cats defensive end Malik Carney who scooped up the ball and went 22 yards for a major. Both Blue Bombers losses took place before the start of their bye week. Winnipeg’s next game is Friday, September 30th against the Saskatchewan Roughriders at IG Field. The Bombers lead the CFL West Division with a 12-2 record. The B.C. Lions are next at 9-3.


Joey Bielik scored a power play goal 3:09 into overtime to lift the Virden Oil Capitals past the Wolverines 4-3 in Waywayseecappo. Nolan Chastko, Brody Wilson and Davis Chorney who potted the overtime winner Friday night in the Oil Capitals 4-3 victory over the Wolverines at Tundra Oil & Gas Place on the MJHL’s opening night, scored in regulation for the visitors. Virden netminder Owen LaRoque made 30 saves.


The Westman Wildcats recorded two wins and two losses at the Firestarter Female U18 Hockey Tournament in Calgary. Paige Kozak scored twice and Payton Murray made 26 saves as the defending Manitoba Female U18 AAA Hockey League champions won their tournament finale 3-1 over the Rocky Mountain Raiders on Saturday.


The Brandon Wheat Kings and Winnipeg Ice wrapped up their pre-season schedules Saturday night. Nolan Ritchie scored twice, Nate Danielson had two assists as Brandon defeated the Moose Jaw Warriors 4-0 at Westoba Place. Wheat Kings netminders Carson Bjarnason and Nicholas Jones combined to stop 26 shots. Winnipeg lost 4-3 to Regina. Parker Berge had a hat-trick for the Pats. Aiden Oiring had two goals and an assist for the Ice. Brandon will host Winnipeg next Saturday to open the 2022-23 Western Hockey League season.


The Winnipeg Jets face the Vancouver Canucks Sunday at the Young Stars Classic in Penticton. The Jets, who will also face the Calgary Flames on Monday, lost 3-2 to the Edmonton Oilers on Friday.
