The Provincial Junior Varsity Volleyball Championships begin today. The Virden Bears at the A/AA girsl championship in Russell and are in a Pool with Hamiota, Warren and the host Major Pratt Trojans. The A/AA boys championship is in Hamiota. The Neelin Spartans are at the AAA girls championship in Altona and are in a Pool with Linden Christian, Niverville and the host Miller Aces. Neelin is also at the AAA boys championship in Winkler. The Spartans are in Pool with Garden Valley, College Beliveau and Springfield. The AAAA championships are in Brandon. Vincent Massey girls are in a Pool with Sturgeon Heights, St. Mary’s and Kelvin. Massey boys are in a Pool with Dakota, St. Paul’s and Oak Park.


Connor Martin had four goals and two assists and Josh Archambault scored twice as the Killarney/Wawanesa Raiders defeated the Neepawa Tigers 8-4 in the lone Westman High School Hockey League game. Mac Heide and Carter Bartley also scored for the Raiders while Kyle O’Connor chipped in with four assists. Brody Pollock, Cohen Kulbacki, Riley Davie and Ward Brister replied for the Tigers.


Zach Benson scored the go-ahead goal 5:16 into the third period as the Winnipeg Ice shaded the Lethbridge Hurricanes 3-2. Ty Nash and Connor McClennon with his 17th of the season also scored for the Ice.


The Winnipeg Jets gave up three third period goals and lost 6-1 to the Minnesota Wild in St. Paul. Kyle Connor had the lone goal for the Jets. Marcus Foligno scored twice for the Wild.


Canada lost 1-0 to Belgium in their Group Stage opener at the World Cup in Qatar. Michy Batshuayi scored in the 44th minute for Belgium. Canada had a chance to take the lead in the 10th minute. Alphonso Davies’ penalty attempt was stopped by Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. Canada’s next match is Sunday against Croatia.


Manitoba champions Zachary Wasylik has a 4-0 record and Lisa Birchard is 3-1 at the 2022 Everest Curling Club Championships at the Ice Palace in the West Edmonton Mall.
