The Winnipeg Jets have signed goaltender Connor Hellebuyck and forward Mark Scheifele to identical seven-year contract extensions with an average annual value of $8.5 million. Scheifele was the first player drafted by the Jets after their return to Winnipeg in 2011. The 30-year-old Kitchener native scored a career-high 42 goals last season. Hellebuyck was chosen in the fifth round of the 2012 draft. The 30-year-old Commerce, Michigan native was the Vezina Trophy winner in 2020 and was a finalist for the award last season as well as 2018. The Jets open the 2023-24 NHL season Wednesday night in Calgary against the Flames.


The Manitoba Moose announced that five players were released from their tryouts and returned to their ECHL teams. Goaltender Dante Giannuzzi was sent to the Utah Grizzlies while defenseman Darick Louis-Jean and forwards Danny Katic, Keaton Jameson and Ryan Foss were returned to the Norfolk Admirals. 


Two Manitoba Junior Hockey League teams are in the Canadian Junior Hockey Leagues Top 20 Rankings. The Winkler Flyers, who are 6-0 to start the 2023-24 season, have moved from fifth to third while the Dauphin Kings, who were unranked last week, are 14th. The Smiths Falls Bears are number one in the country for the second week in a row. The Bears have started strong in Central Canada Hockey League play with a solid 8-0-0-0 record to begin their 2023-24 campaign.


The organizers of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics delivered a proposal to put flag football on the program when the Summer Games return to the United States for the first time in 32 years. The IOC will vote on the proposal later this week. Also included on the LA proposal were baseball and softball, lacrosse, squash and cricket.
