Joey Bielik and Josh Lehto scored second period power play goals in the Virden Oil Capitals 4-1 victory over the Winkler Flyers at the Centennial Arena. Bryce Bryant and Brett Sabel into an empty net with 4:13 left in regulation also scored for the Oil Capitals who lead the Manitoba Junior Hockey League's best-of-seven semifinal two games to one. Virden's Eric Reid made 21 saves. Game four is scheduled for Thursday night at Tundra Oil & Gas Place. 


Kyle Connor scored 1:52 into overtime to lift the Winnipeg Jets past the Nashville Predators 4-3. Mark Scheifele had a goal and two assists for the Jets who have won four in a row. Gabriel Vilardi and Dylan DeMelo also scored for Winnipeg. Connor Hellebuyck made 45 saves. The Predators clinched a spot in the Stanley Cup playoffs with the single point. The Jets face the Dallas Stars Thursday and wrap up their four-game road trip Saturday against the Colorado Avalanche. Winnipeg (48-24-6) is seven points back of the Central Division leading Stars and two points behind the second place Avalanche. The Jets have four games left in the regular season schedule. 


Hockey Canada has hired Jaime Boldt as governance advisor, a new position that will play an important role in supporting and advancing the organization’s governance model and policies. A recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal for her contributions to the province of Saskatchewan, Boldt is an adjunct professor at the University of Regina’s Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy and joins Hockey Canada after five years as the executive director of Globe Theatre in the Queen City. Boldt has also worked as a consultant with Canadian Women & Sport to support sport organizations and leaders in their efforts to advance gender equity and currently is a member of the Forbes Nonprofit Council.


All five Manitoba teams lost on day one of the Players Championship in Toronto which is the last Grand Slam curling event of the season. Kerri Einarson fell 5-4 in an extra end to Eun Ji Gim; Jennifer Jones dropped a 9-2 decision to Isabella Wrana; Kaitlyn Lawes lost 7-3 to Silvana Tirinzoni; Reid Carruthers was shutout 9-0 by Bruce Mouat and Matt Dunstone dropped a 6-4 decision to Yannick Schwaller.


The United States defeated Canada's national women's soccer team 5-4 in a penalty shootout to win the SheBelieves Cup final in Columbus, Ohio. Sophia Smith scored twice in regulation time for the U.S., while Adriana Leon scored twice for Canada before the match was settled with penalty kicks.
