The Virden Oil Kings are the first team to advance to round two of the Tiger Hills Hockey League playoffs. Colin Cook scored his second goal of the game 7:14 into overtime to lift Virden past Hartney 7-6. Devon LeBlanc and Brennan Williams also scored two goals each for the Oil Kings who swept the best-of-three West Division quarterfinal in two straight. Nick Cowan had a pair of goals for the Blues and Skylar Canada had a goal and three helpers. Reese Jones made 24 saves as Neepawa downed MacGregor 4-1 in game one of their East quarterfinal. Jesse Jones, Brad Marshall, Dillin Birch and Garrett Rempel did the goal scoring for the Farmers. Braden Nicoll had the lone goal for the Wild.


The Virden Oil Capitals lost 4-1 to the Portage Terriers at Tundra Oil & Gas Place. Ryan Botterill scored his 33rd and 34th goals of the season for the MJHL's East Division leading Terriers. Davis Chorney had the lone goal for the Oil Capitals who will play a home-and-home with the West Division leading Waywayseecapo Wolverines this weekend. 


The Winnipeg Jets opened their four-game road trip with a 3-1 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Former Jet Patrik Laine had a goal and an assist for the Blue Jackets while Joonas Korpisalo stopped 37 of the 38 shots he faced. Kyle Connor scored his 25th goal of the season for the Jets who saw their three-game winning streak come to an end. David Rittich made 21 saves in net for Winnipeg. 


The Scotties Tournament of Hearts begins tonight at the Sandman Centre in Kamloops. Four Manitoba teams are in the field of 18 and they include three-time reigning Canadian champion Kerri Einarson, Manitoba champion Jennifer Jones along with Kaityln Lawes and Meghan Walter who earned two of the three wildcard spots. Einarson and Lawes will play on tonight's opening draw. Einarson will meet Laurie St. Georges of Quebec and Lawes will meet Kayla Skrlik of Alberta. Jones and Walter play their round robin openers Saturday afternoon. Jones will take on Krista McCarville of Northern Ontario and Walter will meet Casey Scheidegger of Lethbridge who received the other wildcard berth. 


CurlManitoba is hosting the 2023 Dynasty Mixed Doubles Provincial Championship at the St. Vital Curling Club this weekend. The event features 20 teams competing in a triple knockout format starting at 4 p.m. today and concluding at 4 p.m. Monday, February 20th when a new Provincial Champion will be crowned. CurlManitoba has not hosted a Provincial Mixed Doubles Championship since February of 2020. The event was held at the Brandon Curling Club that year, with Derek Samagalski and Krysten Karwacki defeating Steve Irwin and Stacey Irwin in the final.
